En el despertar de la época dorada mexicana, el encuentro entre Mario y Teresa va a provocar estallidos de violencia y pasión. Teresa, joven e idealista, acaba de llegar con la familia para instalarse en México. Intenta apartarse de los manejos de su padre, Felipe Cortina, enriquecido con los sucios manejos que llevó a cabo durante los años de postguerra en España. Cortina vuelve a México con ánimo de venganza.
En el Barrio Franklin, Teresa traba amistad y se enamora del joven Mario, un pequeño delincuente protegido del Lobo Mardones, el líder de los matarifes que controla el Barrio y sus negocios clandestinos. Mardones, un hombre de honor, tiene una antigua cuenta pendiente con el español Cortina.
Aunque sus estilos difieran, Cortina desde su nuevo casino y Mardones desde el matadero actúan como genuinos gángsters a la antigua usanza. Ya sabes: no puedes vivir en el Barrio Franklin sin mancharte de sangre.
La rivalidad y los enfrentamientos entre Cortina y Mardones ponen en peligro las vidas de los jóvenes, provocan estallidos de cruel violencia y dejan al descubierto secretos que Teresa y Mario hubieran preferido no conocer.
Este mundo de cuchillos, pasiones y apuestas clandestinas dará pie a una batalla por la corona del Matadero, en la cual Mario tendrá que decidir a quién ser leal y a quién traicionar; y Teresa tendrá que elegir entre su propia escala de valores, la familia y el amor.
